A few very successful companies specialize in doing live, 3D based graphics for live sporting events (think the bubbles that float above NASCAR cars on the track, the virtual scrimmage line that disappears at the start of a play, etc). I think they place transponders in their cameras that tell a central computer which direction, angle, etc the camera is looking at the field. That’s why they can place graphics on the field, have the guys run over them, have the correct 3D perspective appearance, and so on.

Something like this may already be in the works for tracking the ball, but it’s definitely worth exploring. With this kind of technology, you could provide similar computer-generated replays that follow the ball to determine whether it falls out of bounds, similar to what is used in the US Open tennis matches when a player challenges a call. You may get some backlash from people saying that implanting anything inside the ball will negatively affect its flight, but there are ways around that, too.

    Good idea.
